The 8th Day of Christmas
On this day the Celts poured a mulled cider on the roots of an Apple Tree. Their hope was that the cider would draw the Robin to return, as the robin heralds the coming of Spring, and the earth’s greening.
The 8th Day of Christmas has an integral connection to today’s celebration of civil new year. The early Christians named Sunday as the 8th Day of the week. Sunday — the Day of Resurrection — is seen as both an Omega (last day of the old week) and an Alpha (first day of the new week). And on the 8th Day we recognize that God calls us more than friends — God names us as spouse or beloved. And as ‘spouse’ of God — we assume new responsibility.
It is with full intent that the 8th Day of Christmas is our civil New Year.
On this first day of the civil year — the 8th Day of Christmas — we recognize that we are responsible for co-creating the world with God/Spirit. God has placed enormous talents within us and we are asked now to use those powers wisely.
On the 8th Day of the Winter Solstice Festival, the Celts hoped to lure back the Robin and the bird’s proclamation of coming Spring. And on the 8th Day of Christmas -we stand on the soll of the new civil year — recognizing the power of our intentions and actions.
More than writing new year resolutions — on this day, we stand in awe that as Spirit’s spouse — we are given the power and the responsibility to co-create our world. From the reality of our call to co-create the world — how will you live the days of this new year?
